Dr. Muriel Smith – Vocal adjudicator
The 39th annual Deloraine Border Festival got underway April 2 with the Piano discipline. The second week will feature Visual Arts and Vocal. The following is some background about vocal adjudicator.
Dr. Muriel Smith, singing teacher, author and performer holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Western, Ontario, a Licentiate in Vocal Performance from Trinity College, UK, and a Master of Arts degree in Vocal Studies and a PhD in Musicology from the University of York, UK. While living for over a decade in England, Muriel maintained a vibrant private voice studio, and taught voice and speech arts at numerous theatre and secondary schools. Her students have gone on to study at the major music and theatre academies in the UK and continue to work professionally as singers and teachers. Since her return to Canada, she has adjudicated at festivals and scholarship competitions, lectured at the University of Manitoba, Providence University College and at numerous national and international conferences. Recently, she has written and performed monologues in Winnipeg venues. Muriel’s articles on music cultures have been published in academic journals and her monograph A Century of Sound Connections: The Manitoba Registered Music Teachers’ Association 1919 – 2019 is forthcoming, June 2019. On the lighter side, Muriel enjoys sailing, kayaking, and agility and mushing with her mutts. #half-a-handler dog sports.
