A Manitoba RCMP officer from the Yellowhead detachment has been shot in an incident near Onanole Wednesday.

An RCMP spokesperson said two officers were responding to a reported break and enter at a rural property near the town around 9 p.m. Wednesday evening. They were fired upon as they got out of their cruiser car, striking one officer. He was taken to hospital in Winnipeg where he’s now reported to be in stable condition.

Other officers were deployed to the area and arrested three suspects, all adult males. A fourth male is still at large. Police are searching for him and say he’s driving a black GMC Sierra half ton with the license plate GBX 476.

RCMP are asking people in the Onanole area to be vigilant and call 911 if they see anything suspicious. Their investigation is ongoing. Vehicles leaving and entering Onanole were being stopped and checked.

Meanwhile, Premier Brian Pallister released a statement this morning about the incident. He said, “This is a stark reminder of the danger that police officers face each and every day in their work to keep us all safe. On behalf of all Manitobans, I extend my thoughts and prayers to the officer and his family. I wish to thank his colleagues, first responders and health professionals for their incredible efforts.”
