The 2019 baseball season is wrapping up for the locals. Lucas Maddess, Brady Barron and Dayton Roy had competitive games at the AAA provincials, but Oil Dome came up empty this year. Kyle Breemersch was picked up to play for the Boissevain AA provincial team. A few other players going to provincials with their respective teams include Blake Artz with the Bantam Boissevain team and Jerron Wells and Gavin Wickham also with Mosquito Oildome.
The SWBL finals feature Boissevain and Oak River again this year.
The Toronto Blue Jays might be second guessing their recent trades with Houston. Aaron Sanchez and Joe Biagini combined for seven innings of no hit baseball last week when the Astros no hit the Seattle Mariners. The Jays only major leaguer they got in return, Derek Fisher, missed a couple of games after misjudging a routine flyable and taking it off his face!
The Toronto team's youth movement does look good with three offspring of former major league stars playing: Dante Bichette's son Bo, Vlad Guerrero Jr, and Craig Biggio's son Cavan. Vlad Jr was the American League player of the week and Bo Bichetti has nine extra base hits in his first eight games of his career.
Ashton Bell is currently in Calgary for tryouts with the Canadian Women's National Development team.
Two weeks ago asked what Western Manitoban besides Tanner Jago was nominated for the Hobie Baker top U.S. college hockey player award. It was Wyatt Kalynuk from Virden, who played for the University of Wisconsin. Virden lists only one former NHL player. This week asks who this defenseman was that returned to Brandon after his pro career. It is interesting to note Deloraine lists five NHL players born in our town. This does not include Dan Bonar whose father likely delivered these five in our local hospital.
