Grady Hobbs and the Dauphin kings defeated the Virden Oil Capitals 5-2 last Sunday night. Grady scored the Kings 4th goal with at least a dozen Deloraine fans in attendance. He has 5 points in the 4 games since Christmas. Ashton Bell had the game winning goal in Minnesota/Duluth's 2-0 win over Bemidji last weekend. U. of Regina women's hockey team are 4-0 since Christmas. Kaitlyn Crowe had one point in their victories over Lethbridge and University of British Columbia. Four of Regina's top seven scorers are from Western Manitoba. Along with Kaitlyn, Jaycee Magwood (Killarney), Paige Hubbard (Brandon) and Shaelyn Vallotton (Glenboro) have 35 of the teams 80 points this season.
Bottineau Lumberjacks have two freshman from nearby. Bubba Strain from Boissevain (grandson of Merla Hainsworth) has 3 goals and Nic Vercaigne of Melita is also on the squad.
Last week asked who the Winnipeg Jets traded to get Chad Kilger and Oleg Tverdoresky. These two players totaled 500 NHL goals less than Teemu Selanne who played only three and a half seasons in Manitoba. Selanne went on to play twenty-one seasons and is 11th all time in NHL goals scored. It is often ranked as one of the worst trades ever made in professional hockey. Teemu was also a great ambassador for the game. Mr. Caldwell tells the story of asking Selanne, when he seemed to be in a rush, to autograph twelve hockey cards for a Deloraine Minor team. I am curious if any of those players still have their card 30 years later. It was done with a smile and positive comments. He would also stop for pictures with his young fans.
