Not much happening in the local sport scene these days, but there were some unusual events at the national level.
Canadian major league ball player Joey Votto has played in 6 all-star games and had 4,456 career at bats. But on April 16 he popped out to the first baseman for the first time in his career. The second baseman for the Royals in the late 70’s couldn’t hit it over the first baseman’s head.
Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles was hitless in 54 consecutive at bats (2 seasons in the SWBL). H earned over two million between this. He promptly had 7 hits (3 doubles and a home run) in his next 17 plate appearances.
Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman pitched over20 innings allowing only 3 runs but his teammate failed to score a run to start his season. On the Blue Jay topic, they just completed their best road trip in over 20 years boing 6-1. They also hit into an 8-2-6 double play. Baseball stats geeks explain that one.
Good Friday in Toronto was great. All four professional sport teams won!
Winnipeg Jets 6’ 7” defenseman Tyler Myers could be part of sports history next year. His half-brother Quentin Grimes is projected as top ten NBA pick in the next draft. This could be the first ever family with brother in the NHL and NBA.
The Jets fans feel bad about the early exit of a team that was considered a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. But they have company in Calgary, Pittsburg, Nashville and the biggest playoff bust Tampa Bay.
Congratulations to the Toronto Maple Leafs as the only Canadian team to advance
The Leaf fans are also in next year country for the 52nd straight year.
Last week asked what Jonathan Toews, Dustin Penner and Shane Hnidy had in common. They all brought the Stanley Cup to Manitoba for a few days after winning the NHL championship.
This week asks the name of the long shot winner of the 2019 Masters? It was a sponsor’s dream come true!
