Lace Up For Diabetes in Deloraine

On Saturday August 18th, 2018, starting at 10:00 am Deloraine will be having its 2nd local community 3km walk in support of Diabetes, the “Lace Up for Diabetes Deloraine.” Residents of the community and Deloraine-Winchester Recotourism have teamed up to organize this event to help create awareness about diabetes, and raise funds to support Diabetes Canada’s education, advocacy and research programs.

Statistics from Diabetes Canada report that nearly 1 in 3 Canadians are living with diabetes, which is an estimated 11 million people who have diabetes or prediabetes in Canada today. Every 3 minutes a Canadian is diagnosed, and there are roughly 1.5 million of them who have type 2 diabetes, and don’t know it. In Canada, diabetes is the leading cause for blindness, 30% of all strokes, 40% of heart attacks, 50% of kidney failure requiring dialysis, and 70% of all non-traumatic leg and foot amputations.

Some of Diabetes Canada’s goals for 2016-2020 in order to end the diabetes healthcare epidemic are to remove ten million kilograms of sugar from Canadians diets, to achieve one million more recommended diabetes test and treatment targets to avoid and delay heart attacks, strokes, and blindness caused by diabetes, and to create a hundred thousand personal connections between youth with type 1 diabetes who may otherwise feel isolated. “Lace up for Diabetes in Deloraine” is a great opportunity for the community to raise awareness and show their support for those living with diabetes. Local event organizers are currently requesting donations from local business to help support the event. For more information on how to partner with this initiative, contact Recotourism Director, Jen Mcmechan at recotourism@delowin.ca. Pledge forms and more information will soon be available at the municipal office.
