Katie's Cottage - home away from home

Sarah Currah and her husband Gordon, of Hartney MB, were referred to Boundary Trails Health Centre (BTHC), (located between Winkler and Morden, MB) for medical care.  Their care found Sarah needing a place to stay for a few nights while Gordon was in the hospital.  She was told by C.W. Wiebe Medical Clinic staff, in Winkler, about a place called Katie’s Cottage.  It is an 8-bedroom respite facility located across from BTHC licensed to accommodate day and overnight guests using the local health facilities such as BTHC, Salem and Tabor Home or Eden Health Services.

“We were quite surprised!  We didn’t know about Katie’s Cottage.” Remarks Sarah Currah, “Staying there really simplified and took the stress of extra driving out of our time.  You know I just wanted to know that Gordon was doing well. The convenience of Katie’s Cottage being so close to the hospital and the helpful staff were so important to me at that time.”

Kaitlyn Reimer’s dream was to make a home away from home for her community after her own cancer diagnosis.  In her short time on this earth, Kaitlyn envisioned a lasting legacy that has been experienced in her home community, her province, her country and around the world.

Cheryl Ewert, of Redvers SK, when asked about her stay at Katie’s Cottage said this, “One word: AWESOME!   Katie’s Cottage provided a comfortable, relaxing environment with a lovely lounge area where you could talk things over with newly made friends. Rooms were as clean as could be and furnished with anything you could need and a much appreciated. Continental Breakfast was available in the morning. The cost for this home away from home: $45!!”

“More and more people are utilizing the Boundary Trails Health Centre or have loved ones being cared for at Tabor Home in Morden, Salem Home and Eden Health Care Services in Winkler.” says Ruth Reimer, Katie’s mom and Executive Director of Katie’s Cottage, “ We want to make sure they know about us!”

Cheryl Ewert gratefully expounds, “The story of Kaitlyn’s dream is framed and hung on the wall at the cottage. It assured me that death is not the end, but the beginning. A BIG thank you for making Kaitlyn’s dream come true.”

Sarah Currah continues to say, “Katie’s Cottage is a very worthwhile cause.  If you are looking for a place to make a donation, any help you can give would make a difference!”
