Half section project raises over $265,000

What started as a dream over five years ago has become a reality in the community of Deloraine. We are now home to the new Deloraine-Winchester Community Complex – which houses both the Deloraine Winchester Community Hall and the Deloraine Curling Rink. There are many individuals, businesses and organizations to thank for all the dedication, hard work and fundraising which has been put towards this project. We couldn’t have done it without all the support we have received on the many initiatives which have taken place over the last several years.

On Behalf of the Deloraine Winchester Community Complex Fundraising Committee

THANK YOU

The Half Section Fundraiser was developed in 2017 and it is in final year of the agreement. You can still purchase acres at a cost of $100.00 per acre and anyone can donate towards this initiative, which currently supports the Deloraine-Winchester Community Complex and as a small token of appreciation you are eligible to receive a tax-deductible receipt.

In the beginning, project coordinator Liza Park along with Doug Morningstar, Duane Edwards (Fundraising Committee) and Blair Goethals (Curling Club) hosted the Half Section Fundraiser Kick Off Night at The Rendezvous Restaurant. Volunteers signed up for various tasks which are required to be completed each year; spring prep, sowing, swathing, hauling, storage and much more, the response was overwhelming! Additionally, there were opportunities for individuals who couldn’t help in the field to do the work of securing all the supplies which go into growing and caring for the crops. The success of this fundraiser is from ALL the helping - from arranging fuel and fertilizer to bums in the seat of the combines and semi-trucks. We could not have done it without the support of our volunteers and the community!

Thank you to each and every person who has participated in this venture over the last 3 years. Many community volunteers and surrounding area businesses donated time, money, products, meals in the field, equipment and much, much more. Thank you!

Two quarter sections made up the half section fundraiser including Edwards’ Section - SW 36-2-23 and McMechans’ Section - SW 5-3-23. Thank you to both families for providing land to rent and a place to grow our fundraising crops. The following was sown into each of the quarters:

Year 1  Canola /Beans            Year 2  Beans /Wheat              Year 3  Wheat  /Canola

There was a substantial profit each year. While the seasons and market prices vary, fortunately a total of $265,305.81 fwas raised for the Deloraine Winchester Community Complex. There is still time to donate and receive your tax-deductible receipts for 2019. Stop in at the Municipal Office or Morrison Agencies to purchase your acre today.

This fundraising initiative has proven successful with an average of 225 acres sold per year. As the three year agreement is over, the committee alongside the Municipality of Deloraine-Winchester, would like to transform this fundraiser into a community fundraiser, known as the DeloWin Community Section. The Municipality invites 2 partners from our community of organizations, not-for profits and service groups to join in on the earning potential of this fundraiser. Organizations would be committing to work agreements in which various tasks need to be carried out for the success of this fundraiser so don’t fret if you can’t drive a combine, the 3 organizations would work together ensuring the work gets done. In addition, your organization will be required to sell acres for 100.00 per square, and as an added advantage for your group, through partnering with the Municipality on this venture, will be able to offer tax-deductible receipts for EVERY ACRE SOLD. From now until January 31, 2020 any community organization, service groups or not-for profits are welcome to express their interest in joining forces to help take on some of the work for this venture in 2020. To express interest or get details please contact Jennifer McMechan at the Municipal Office 204-747-3668 or recotourism@delowin.ca.

*at the time of expressing interest no organization is guaranteed a partnership, if more then 2 organizations apply a formal application will be required and a selection committee will be formed
