Experts join forces to teach Adulting 101

Adulting. It’s a 21st century verb.

It’s a collection of widely-shared memes.

And now, it’s a subject you can study.

Earlier this month, Prairie West Recreation held its first ever course in Adulting 101, organized by PWR director Laurel Lamb and facilitated by local experts.

Of course, any time you launch a new and experimental program, there’s no guarantee it will fly.

But it did. And not just among young people.

“Fourteen people registered,” says Lamb. “We had single women, couples, business owners, and a retiree.” And they came from as far away as Rocanville and Birtle for the one-evening session.

The class was held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Virden on Sept. 16. Participants rotated among four stations set up in the hall, each focusing on a different aspect of adulting behavior related to finances.

Professionals were recruited to create and teach the curriculum: lawyer Matthew Blunt explained wills and power of attorney; financial planner Keith Orr spoke on the basics of investing; Gwenda Hayward introduced budgeting skills; and accountant Beth Collier taught income tax basics.

“We thought we’d give it a try, and it was successful so who knows where it will go from here,” says Lamb. “Hopefully there will be more evenings presented and people will keep on learning. That’s what it’s all about!”

Lamb says there could be more adulting classes on topics like how to teach your children about money, effective tax strategies, fraud protection, budgeting, Quickbooks, and more.

“This stuff isn’t discussed every day and it’s really important.”
